摘要
城市是文学书写的重要场域。林语堂在其英文作品《京华烟云》《风声鹤唳》《朱门》和《辉煌的北京》中对北京、上海、南京、西安等城市的形象进行了跨语际书写,并勾勒出以上述城市为坐标的城市空间。本文梳理了林语堂文学作品中城市与人文在空时性、越界性、指涉性和可读性之间的互动关系,描绘了作者跨语际书写中的城市形象。北京作为世界之都,彰显独具东方特色的历史地位、文化价值与艺术魅力。上海不仅代表复杂的资本世界,隐喻女性化的城市形象和战火中的成长之都,也指涉城市现代化的曲折进程。西安曾经历鼎盛的辉煌、现代的批判和战争的蹂躏,指涉古老东方帝都的沉默。饱受磨难的南京则是古典都城创伤的言说者。在林语堂建构的从北京出发,经由西安、天水、兰州、哈密,直至乌鲁木齐的城市空间中,兰州到乌鲁木齐的西部地区指涉心灵回归的广阔原野,从北京到乌鲁木齐的位移是从世界到中国、从城市空间到田园荒漠空间的双重指涉。四部作品中城市空间的循环形成“从北向南,由西向东,最后向北”的“莫比乌斯带”。
The city serves as a vital site of literary.In his English-language works—including Moment in Peking,A Leaf in the Storm,The Vermillion Gate,and Imperial Peking:Seven Centuries of China,Lin Yutang engages in a translingual construction of urban imagery,portraying cities such as Beijing,Shanghai,Nanjing,and Xi an,while mapping an urban spatial narrative with these cities as coordinates.This paper explores the interaction between urban space and cultural elements in Lin s works across dimensions of temporality,transgression,referentiality and readability,thereby revealing the urban imagery shaped through his translingual writing.Beijing,as a world capital,embodies the historical significance,cultural value,and artistic allure distinctive to the East.Shanghai represents a complex world of capital,metaphorically evokes a feminized urban identity and a city of wartime coming-of-age,while also referring to the turbulent process of modernization.Xi an,once resplendent in imperial grandeur,now reflects modern critique and wartime devastation,signifying the silence of an ancient Eastern capital.War-torn Nanjing emerges as a voice for the trauma embedded in classical capital cities.In Lin Yutang s constructed urban geography—stretching from Beijing through Xi an,Tianshui,Lanzhou,and Hami to rümqi—the western regions from Lanzhou to rümqi suggest a vast inner landscape of spiritual return.The spatial displacement from Beijing to rümqi symbolically references a shift from the global to the Chinese,and from urban space to pastoral and desert space.Across the four novels,the cyclical motion of urban space forms a M bius strip—moving from north to south,west to east,and ultimately returning north.
