In the literary traditions from the Spring and Autumn period through the Han dynasty, human subjects often projected their perceptions of social hierarchy onto animals in nature, endowing the"dragon-fish"imagery with implicit connotations of status and rank. The widely known folk tale of the carp leaping over the Dragon Gate inherits this tradition. From a sociocultural perspective, the tale's spatial metaphor of an upward ascent mirrors the aspirations of scholar-officials seeking advancement and, therefore, gradually has become a symbolic representation that shaped their language and everyday practices. As social mobility increased, this symbolism also entered popular discourse.Embraced by the public due to its alignment with shared values, the tale was further generalized into an auspicious metaphor for ambition and upward striving. This evolution refects the proactive and aspirational spirit of both scholars and ordinary people.
