Unlike the narrative tradition of the Italian art,in the seventeenth-century Netherlands, painting brought a“display of craft”.In The Art of Describing:Dutch Art in the Seventeenth Century,Svetlana Alpers led a revolt within the European tradition, drawing attention to the“descriptive”of Dutch painting:the relation between the Dutch painting and the reality was similar to that between the eyes and the world. In the field of visual culture and landscape studies of the 20th cen-tury,the article took a new look on the complex context of Alpers’discussion, when the extraterritorial views became imperial landscapes, when the effects created metaphors, the northern tradition of describing would be hard to get recognized.
