“For page or stage”is a central topic discussed in the English translating of traditional Chinese drama and a primary issue to be solved in its“going out”to the outside world. After a review of its more than 200 years’Chinese drama translating practice, this paper observes that the functions of traditional Chinese drama in Anglo-American cultures have shifted from“imaginary and exploitative rewriting for stage”at initial time to“peeping and manipulating information obtainments”,and then to“translating for Chinese language and Chinese knowledge education”at last.During this shifting process from stage to page, the receptors are finally professional readers with specialists in Chinese literature, undergraduates and graduates who are attracted by traditional Chinese drama as the main bodies. This implies that,to meet their demands, necessary strategic adjustments must be made in the actual translating practice. And only in this way can traditional Chinese drama be really integrated into the Anglo-American cultural systems.
