Central Plains nao bells are mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, especially concentrating at the Yinxu area.South China nao bells are mainly distributed in Hunan and Jiangxi regions south of the Yangtze River with the most dense concentration in the Xiang River valley. There is no overlap in the spatial distribution of these two kinds of nao bells. In terms of archaeological context and assemblage,no evident similarities can be discerned except few instances. The Central Plains bronze nao bells are mainly used by high-ranking noblemen such as generals and clan leaders, who generally engaged in military-related activities,or even probably controlled military power to varying degrees. However, the identity of South China nao bell users and their use contexts are indeterminate except some examples from the Shang tomb at Xingan and earth mound tombs at Yangfushan in Ouhai.Although they may belong to different cultural traditions, they are closely related to each other.Their interconnections prompt the spread of Central Plains bronze ritual musical civilization to South China on the one hand, and the emergence, development, and flourishing of unique South China nao bells on the other hand.
