A Study of Chinese-English Translation of Chinese Fishermen’s Genglubu: With Genglubu by Su Deliu as an Example

摘要 “更路簿”是研究南海航海历史和海洋文明的珍贵资料,也是中国南海维权的重要民间证据。因其存在大量的岛屿俗名、航海专业表达、古罗盘术语和海南方言,给英译带来了极大的挑战。论文在阐述其语言特点、翻译难点后,对其中涉及文化负载词的“更”、岛屿俗名、古罗盘术语以及其中的一部分语篇进行了解析,确定了翻译原则与策略,可以运用异化、归化和补偿翻译策略,采取意译、音译、直译、替代、转换、增译、注释等多种翻译方法融合并用,确保原文与译文彼此顺应,既要保留源语的异域文化特征,又要获得目标语读者的广泛接受,旨在为“更路簿”获得可信的英译文,为传播中国海洋文化提供学术支撑。 Genglubu is not only the valuable historical literature for studying China’s navigational history and marine civilization, but also serves as the fundamental evidence to safeguard China’s sovereignty over the South China Sea. Translating Genglubu into English is challenging in that there are such a great many difficult points as the folk names of the South China Sea islands, the navigational technical expressions, the ancient compass terminologies, and Hainan dialects. Starting with the linguistic features and translation difficulties,this paper interprets the culture-loaded word “geng”, the folk names of islands, the antient compass terms and some discourse. Furthermore, such translation principles and strategies as foreignization, domestication and compensation are confirmed to secure the mutual adaptation between the source text and the target one, along with the integrated utilization of translation techniques and methods like transliteration, free translation,literal translation, substitution, conversion, amplification and annotation. Thus, the exotic cultural characteristics are kept Therefore, this research aims at the reliable English translation of Genglubu, providing the academic support for publicizing Chinese marine civilization.
