During the pre-Qin times(corresponding to the Xia-Shang period of the Central Plains), a special stamped pottery, hu-jar with a tripod pitcher’s mouth, was widely distributed in southeastern China, including Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangxi. We, in the present paper, reviewed archaeological discoveries of those hu-jars and, through typological analysis, we subdivided these hu-jars into three types. We also dated the pottery assemblage to three periods, the Xia Dynasty being the earliest, the Early Shang in the middle, and the Late Shang being the latest. It is even possible that some pottery can be dated to the Early Zhou period at the latest. In terms of spatial distribution, we suggest that the hu-jars were distributed in six major regions, including the Upper and Lower Minjiang River valley, the Yangtze River Delta, northern and eastern Guangdong, and the Pearl River Delta. We proposed that these hu-jars can trace their origin to the borders of Fujian, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, and then spread to the southeast coast. These jars, we guess, were used to hold and pour liquids but not for heating up liquids as pottery gui-tripod pitchers.
