According to the archaeological data from the Zhou to the Qin-Han periods, the bronze duo bells firstly appeared during the Middle Western Zhou period. Its origin might have derived from the hybrid of the size and the yong part of the bronze nao bells and the shape and structure of the tongue of ling bells in the Late Shang and Early Western Zhou periods. The Chu and Wu-Yue cultural zones are key regions of the origin, development and spread of the bronze duo bell with wooden handle. The simplification of casting process and purpose of using light material might have been the underlying reason that some duo bells were made of multiple types of materials. The discoveries of a number of bronze duo bells from the Middle Spring and Autumn to Han periods together with bronze weaponry in tombs confirm their function of signal passing during military occasions, which were also mentioned in transmitted documents.
