Topophrenia: Place, Narrative, and the Spatial Imagination is a prime collection of Robert T. Tally Jr.’s achievements in spatial literary studies over the last decade. This book explains several key concepts, integrates spatial theories and findings from different disciplines, explores such topics as utopia, fantasy, adventure stories, and literary geography, and outlines the significance of space, spatiality, place, and mapping to literary activities and cultural theories. Focusing on the interrelations between being, writing, and reading after the spatial turn, Tally’s study examines the phenomena of "topophrenia," "literary cartography," and "geocriticism." Tally believes that in the postnational era of globalization, one’s fundamental awareness of place(topophrenia) has been increasingly intensified, which requires us to regard literary writing as a form of mapmaking in order to construct an imaginative totality and in turn, to embrace a geocritical approach to analyze the spatiality of the text. Tally’s research has mainly been influenced by existentialism, human geography, and Marxism.
