In the modern poultry industry, some management practices, such as raring birds in a cage system with high density, phase feeding and beak trimming, may cause excessive stress in birds, leading to abnormal behaviors, such as feather pecking, aggression and even cannibalism. The gut microbiota has been recognized as a virtual endocrine organ across species and regulates the hosts’stress response and related abnormal behav⁃iors via the established bidirectional communications of the gut⁃brain axis which can integrate information from metabolism, immune, endocrine and neural pathways, and through the peripheral nervous system including in⁃testinal nerve and vagus, microbial metabolites such as 5⁃hydroxytryptamine and short chain fatty acids, and immune system. In this review, the excessive stress behaviors of laying hens caused by feeding and manage⁃ment measures were systematically summarized, and possible mechanism of microbial⁃intestinal⁃brain axis reg⁃ulating chicken stress and related behaviors was also discussed, aiming to provide some references for probiot⁃ics application in the breeding and management of laying hens.
