Tim Barrow’s Union is a play with strong realistic concerns that draws on significant historical events.Adopting grotesque realism in reference to detailed historical records,the playwright uses such writing techniques as metaphor,carnivalization,comparison and contrast to reproduce a fictional and realistic picture of the union of Scotland and England in 1707,a most far-reaching event in the modern history of Scotland.Influential figures of the time,such as Queen Anne,Ramsey the poet and Defoe the spy,are also vividly depicted.This tragedy juxtaposes the petty figures with the princes and officials,mercilessly and sarcastically ridicules the greed and selfishness of the ministers and the sickly,willful Queen.The skillful combination of vulgar and sublime styles implies the equality among people and exhibits different political,cultural and spiritual conditions in Scotland and England.The relationship between the individual and the times is also highlighted through the epiphany and growth of Ramsey the protagonist.
