It has been noticed that teeth remains of Chinese water deer(Hydropotes inermis),as well as hook-shaped objects made from them, were often buried in tombs of the Dawenkou Culture. The hook-shaped objects were most often unearthed from tombs of the adults, who were ranked the upper-middle class of society and may have served as the host of ceremonies and rituals. Many teeth remains of Chinese water deer were clearly unprocessed and were held in hands of the tomb occupant. We believe that these teeth remains were related to tooth ablation of the Dawenkou Culture,a practice influenced by the Peiligang Culture.
