The Thorn Birds is the masterpiece of Colleen McCullough,an Australian contemporary female writer.Being reputed as the“Gone with the wind of Australia”,this novel mainly introduces the life experiences and fighting for fate of three generations in Cleary family,leaving readers everlasting resonance.With the help of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs,the development of the heroine’s self-consciousness on different stages can be analyzed thoroughly,which helps readers get a full picture of the characters and themes in this novel.
