The Shimao site and the Taosi site are the two most important mega-sites in North China from the Late Longshan era to the early Xia Dynasty. Both might have been early political centers.Based on a comprehensive analysis of updated archaeological discoveries and interdisciplinary research results, the current study preliminarily discusses interaction between these two sites. It is argued that the dynamic of interaction between the Shimao site and the Taosi site varies over time.More importantly, the Taosi culture was so infl uenced by Shimao in the middle and late periods that it altered the cultural identity of the former as evidenced by the archaeological record.
