摘要
《未被征服的人》不是福克纳美化旧南方历史的媚俗之作,而是他反思“南方英雄罗曼司”危害的严肃作品。通过叙述主人公的内战经历和战后兴衰轨迹,小说揭示,“南方英雄罗曼司”是掩饰战败的自我欺骗话语与原始荣誉观结合的产物,它遮蔽了真实的历史面目,带有文化基因缺陷。作家解构“南方英雄罗曼司”意在帮助南方旧贵族青年后裔卸下英雄神话造成的精神重负,让他们直面本群体在现代变革中衰落的现实,最终在新的历史条件下重建本群体文化领导权。
The Unvanquished is not a novel for glorifying the Old South,but William Faulkner's serious meditation on the hazard of"Southern Heroic Romance".Through narrating the hero's life in and after the Civil War,Faulkner suggests that the Romance,as a mix of self-deceptive discourse and primitive view of honor,shields historical truth and inherits cultural flaws.In deconstructing the Romance,Faulkner hopes that southern youth may get rid of spiritual burdens imposed on them by the myths,stand up to the reality of their decline and reestablish their cultural hegemony in the modern historical conditions.
