Within 20th century American literature, Chinese-American women writers have played a part in unearthing cultural connotations and displaying Chinese culture to reflect their age, with these writers’ multiple identities, unique perspectives and exquisite writing techniques. From a perspective of transnationalism, this paper examines the background of three generations of Chinese-American women writers represented by Jade Snow Wong, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Amy Tan, and demonstrates how they have reproduced the image of their "imagined motherland" under specific historical and cultural circumstances. The paper also unveils the evolving relationship between the stories of writers’ "imagined motherland" and American mainstream culture, which manifests Chinese women writers’ struggles in adapting and integrating into America. Their experience may enlighten contemporary studies on Chinese culture, ‘China Story’, and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.
