“Wilderness”is both a key word in American ecological thought and an important concept of American ecocriticism. In the Chinese eco-literature study,“wilderness”is widely translated into“荒野”in Chinese, which may be derived from the Chinese translation of Jack London’s novel The Call of the Wild. However, the meaning of“荒野”is rooted in traditional farming civilization of China, practical rationality, humanistic feelings and orthodox consciousness whereas the concept of“wilderness”is rooted in the savage hunting culture of the West, religious beliefs, marine culture and marginal consciousness.Significant differences exist between them. Therefore,“wilderness”,while following the historical realities, had better be translated in various terms to suit local conditions, embodying its complex connotations as well as conforming to the profound differences in ecological concepts and aesthetic consciousness of Chinese and American cultural traditions.
