This article investigates the date, historical background, the nature of trading, travelling route, ship cargo, and significance of the NanAo No.1 shipwreck by synthesizing the porcelains and Song coins unearthed, relevant texts and dated porcelains, and location of the shipwreck. The author argues that the shipwreck date to the Longqing reign during the opening-sea event and, therefore, holds significance in understanding this new policy's impacts on the maritime trade. In addition, the author suggests that the first part of the traveling route of the cargo ship overlapped with the Spanish global galleon trade. The NanAo No.1 shipwreck is also significant for understanding the maritime trade after the discovery of the new trade route. The shipwreck presents key evidence for the research on the porcelain industry in Jingdezhen and Zhangzhou kilns after the opening-sea policy, especially for the study of early Zhangzhou kilns and the influences on Zhangzhou kilns by Jingdezhen. Last, the shipwreck also provides essential material evidence for enhancing knowledge on the ship-manufacturing and navigation techniques during the Ming Dynasty.
