Objiective: To explore the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between embarrass- ment and perfectionism in college students. Methods: Totally 771 college students[327 males and 444 females, aged 17 to 26, mean age (20 ±3)] from Harbin's two universities were assessed with the Chinese Version of the Suscep- tibility to Embarrassment Scale (SES), Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS, positive per- fectionism includes orderliness dimension, negative perfectionism includes concern over mistakes, parental criticism, personal standards, doubts about actions four dimensions) and Chinese Version of the Self-liking/Self-competence Scale(SLCS-R). Results: The scores of SES were positively correlated with the scores of FMPS, negative perfec- tionism, concem over mistakes, parental criticism, personal standards and doubts about actions (r = 0. 15 2 0. 54, Ps 〈 0.01). The scores of SES and its 4 dimensions were negatively correlated with the scores of SLCS-R and its 2 di- mensions (r = -0. 58 - -0. 25, Ps 〈 0.01). Self-esteem played a partly mediating role between embarrassment and positive with negative perfectionism, the confidence interval from Bootstrap output were 95% ( -0. 22 ---0. 14) and 95% (0. 14 --0. 21), The mediating effect accounted for the total effect 37, 5% between embarrassment and negative perfectionism, and the mediating effect between embarrassment and positive perfectionism were suppress- ing effects[ direct effects I 0. 13 I , indirect effects |-0. 18 |〉 total effects I -0. 05 I ]. Conclusion: There may be a close correlation of embarrassment, perfectionism and self-esteem. Perfectionism could directly affect embar- rassment through self-esteem.
