Most of traditional consumption studies investigate consumer decision making and behavior at the proximate level by developing domain-general mechanisms, without, in many cases, an effective and comprehensive integration of the studies on different topics. An evolutionary perspective can help to examine the fundamental motives that drive consumers' consumption behavior at the ultimate level. Moreover, evolutionbased domain-specific fundamental motives can integrate different consumer decisions and behavioral patterns under different circumstances. From an evolutionary perspective, the paper elaborates on the evolution and mechanism of the fundamental motive system as well as its application to consumer research.
