When referring to Japan’s territorial expansions since the modern times,Chinese scholars are in-clined to focus on its territorial seizures with the use of force. However, more than resorting to force,Japan also chose to enlarge its own territory through diplomatic channels, thus glorifying itself as a civilized nation.“Bonin Islands Negotiations”provide us an opportunity to look into Japan’s diplomatic behavior in the process of terri-torial expansions.Either at the end of the Shogunate eras or in the early Meiji period,Japan acquired sovereign-ty of the Bonin Islands through a series of negotiations with Great Britain and also the United States.Even after the conclusion of World War II,Japan succeeded in taking back the sovereign rights over the Bonin Islands through a bilateral agreement with the United States.Making an in -depth exploration on the “Bonin Islands negotiations”could help us gain further understandings of Japan’s diplomatic measures for territorial expansion.
