Liberal arts education has long been associated with preparing students to become responsiblecitizens and society's next generation of leaders. From Plato and Aristotle in the West to Confucius in the East, education aimed at nurturing the wisdom and virtues necessary for a harmonious and just society. However, modern education emphasizes learning how to exploit natural resources to satisfy an increasing appetite forpersonal consumption. Consequently, educating citizens has shifted from nurturing the virtues of harmony andjustice to obtaining skills and techniques that pvmote environmental and social manipulation to satisfy aninsatiable desire for selfish consumption rather than a sustainable, just, and ecologically responsible society forall. How then, might we recapture the original wisdom embodied in the liberal arts education and redirect ittoward educating citizens for an ecological civilization? This paper takes a small liberal arts college in Kansas asan example to show how to rethink and reform liberal arts education by creating a partnership between thecollege and local community that would help create citizens for an ecological civilization.
