In this paper,based on a barotropic vorticity equation including orographic effect on a rotating sphere,the theory of wave propagation in a slowly varying medium is applied to discuss the influences of the topography and the basic flow on the propagation of Rossby waves,the wave rays and the change of wavenumber along wave rays are calculated.It is shown that the effect of topography on the wave rays is remarkable.
