In recent three decades, there has been an emergent critical awareness of an American Jewish literary revival, in which the desire to assimilate gives way to a renewed interest in Jewish religion, history and culture in contemporary writ- ers' works. Literature on Israel, the foremost preoccupation of American Jewish discourse has accordingly flourished. For women writers in particular, Israel' s connotation with motherhood and mothering, with homecoming and regeneration offers tremendous possibilities of literary imagination. This paper aims to explore three works of such imagination, namely Loving- kindness by Anne Roiphe, From a Sealed Room by Rachel Kadish and Seven Blessings by Ruehaman King. Studying them through the lens of Bildungsroman novel, this paper tries to understand what role Israel plays in American Jewish young women' s pursuit of self-identity, and how this pursuit embodies the paradoxical relationship between mother and daughter, feminism and orthodoxy, Jewish and American.
