AIM: To investigate the relationship between tooth wear and dentition defect. METHODS:The datas were collected by a questionnaire survey conducted in 257 patients with 5930 teeth. The teeth were examined ac- cording to the Smith and Knight tooth wear index (TWI). The dentition defects of the patients were recorded by the hi- erarchical dental functional classification system. Then multiple linear regression was applied to analyze the relationship between tooth wear and dentition defect classification. The t test was applied to analyse the influence of gender on tooth wear. RESULTS: In patients with teeth ≥ 10 in both upper and lower jaws the anterior teeth and premolars showed lower TWI ( P 〈 0.05, B 〈 0) than in those with teeth ≥ 10 in both jaws. In patients with occluding pairs of molars ≥ 1 at both side of the dentition, premolars showed lower TWI ( P 〈 0.05, B 〈 0 ) than in those without occluding pair of molars at both sides of the dentition. In the male patients TWI was higher on molars than in the females(P 〈0.05), no difference of TWI was found on anterior teeth and premolars between the males and females ( P 〉 0.05 ). CONCLU- SION : Tooth wear is related with the number of remained teeth and occluding pairs in the dentition. The males have se-verer tooth wear than the females.
