The endocrine and exocrine pancreas are conventionally considered to be two separate entities closely related in anatomy and function, and any disease that affects one will inevitably involve the other. Pancreatic diseases, including acute and chro- nic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis and pancreatic cancer, may result in diabetes mellitus (DM), and the progression of DM can greatly influence the prognosis of exocrine pancreatic diseases, affect the patient's quality of life, and even cause life-threatening complica- tions. DM is an independent risk factor of mortality in the patients with exocrine pancreatic diseases. This article reviews the interac- tions between the endocrine and exocrine pancreas.
