The 20th Century witnessed great social upheavals and radical political changes in the former Yugoslavia, an abductive analysis of which is of both theoretical value and practical significance. Based on an analysis of the ethnic language relations, language policies and language planning, this paper tries to interpret the roles of the linguistic nationalism in the former Yugoslavia’s political changes. It is argued that a too relaxed language policy had encouraged the linguistic nationalism, let go unchecked the role of a language in constructing an ethnic identity, and finally led to the full play of its detrimental effects, i.e., breaking a nation. Besides, an overemphasis on the absolute equality of ethnic languages and an ignorance of the roles of a common national language in constructing national identity had provided the ethnic separatists an opportunity and caused the gradual strengthening of ethnic nationalism. It is suggested that education be called into full play in the nation-building of a multi-ethnic country.
