《查太莱夫人的情人》是劳伦斯一生最受诟议的著作。其作品的主导倾向究竟是对资本主义现代文明社会的批判,或是对现代性爱彻底解放的极力首肯,还是二者兼而有之?众说纷纭的主题使《查太莱夫人的情人》成为文坛最复杂的作品之一。不论评论家对其作品作何种评判,但该小说的主导倾向只有一个,那就是倡导男女性爱的和谐统一。
