There have been a large number of web sites helping people trace their ancestors and compile their genealogies, especially on the World Wide Web(WWW)since 1990s. The vast amount of data are available and the hypertext-link function used on the web determines the nature of electronic genealogies, which is deemed to be very different from that of hand-written or printed genealogies. Making use of the data available on WWW and that collected at a personal interview, the author attempts to gain a better understanding of the motives behind, and the methods and criteria involved in the compilation of genealogies in the age of internet. The paper also asks what improvement in transportation and communication might have affected the kinship construction effort made by urban-dwellers in the 21st century.
