In An Open Letter to Leszek Kolakowski （ 1973 ）, E. P. Thompson tried to inform the Second British New Left about the way he understood how to be an authentic Marxist in Britian. The man that he addressed in the letter was Leszek Kolakowski, a Marxist from Eastern Europe who was being lionized by the Second British New Left, and, Thompson thought, had betrayed Marxism.
