Hardy's novel Far from the Madding Crowd embodies his ecological ethics through vivid descriptions of scenery and impressive artistic images. He emphasizes the non-instrumental value of nature, affirms the inherent purpose of biological community and advocates respect for life and nature. Not only were these thoughts of great significauce in Hardy 's time but they are still nowadays. All these thoughts accord with modern ecological ethics. However, Hardy also emphasizes the nature' s instrumental value, personal feeling not animal' s, and stresses the influence of fate not ecology on man. The contradiction in his ecological ethics deserves our attention and careful consideration.
