John Portman & Associates of US is a first American commercial design practice entering China. It has been actively involved in the process of urbanization of Chinese cities since the early 1980s. This paper reviews the design projects of John Portman & Associates in Shanghai, namely, Shanghai Center, Bund Center and Tomorrow Square. Each project - its intention, design, and usage- is analyzed in an angle of Chinese modernity in a "global-local" context. The authors try to reveal a historic process of how the American design reshape the urban space of Shanghai, and the reasons and impact of importing architecture.
