Objective To observe the correlation between the level of interleukin-6( IL-6 ) in the aqueous humor and the severity of diabetics macular edema (DME). Methods This retrospective study ineluded 57 patients ( 65 eyes) with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy who had cataract surgery, IL-6 in undiluted aqueous specimens collected before surgery were measured by enzyme-llnked immunosorbent assay, Several factors possible related to DME were analyzed. Results The level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor of 65 eyes was 12.17 -327.99 μg· L^-1 (mean 62.44 μg· L^-1 ). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that, with the level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor increased, the possibility of complicating clinical significant macttlar, edema in diabetic patients increased, and other system factors including age, course of diabetes, glycosylated hemoglobin, hypertention, treatment of insulin had no effect on DME. The regression equation was Y=EXP(5.49- 4.16 ×X6), P〈0.01.The level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor was significantlyt correlated with the severity of DME( r = 0.63,P 〈 0.01),with the level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor increased, the severity of DME increased. Conclusion The level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor is positive correlated with the severity of DME. With the level of IL-6 in the aqueous humor increases, the severity of DME also increases.
