Objective To investigate the styles of help seeking for mental health problems among adolescents aged 15 - 19 years old in Zhejiang province and their difference between such status as sexes, living areas and being students or not. Methods 1194 adolescents, who were randomly sampled, were investigated using Chinese version of 12 items General Health Questionnaires (GHO-12). Results Using 2/3 as the cut-off value, 23.2% of the subjects were GHQ-12 positive. There were about 45% of the general adolescents and 60% of the high-risk adolescents who had ever sought help for nmntal health problems, but the majority of which were frum non-prefessional ones such as relatives and friends, while only 0.3% of the general adolescents and 1.1% the high-risk adolescents sought help from psychiatrists. As far as help seeking from nonprofessional origins was concerned, the percentage from friends was much higher than that from relatives, and there also existed significant difference between sexes, habitats, and the status of being a student of not. Conclusions The incidence rate of mental health problems among adolescents in Zhejiang province is relatively high. The majority of the adolescents are accustomed to seek help from non-professional origins, while few of them seek help from psychiatrists. Increasing awareness of mental health problems among adolescents as well as their relatives and friends, reducing the stigma and discrimination during the process of help seeking, improving the quality of mental health services and enhancing the confidence of adolescents to psychiatrists may contribute to increase the rate of help seeking from professional mental health agencies.
