Throughout the long history of seismic occurrence it has been apparent that structures built on or within rock have.for the most part.withstood the effects of seismic shaking better than comparable structures on soils. This paper examines the many case histories, showing the differ- ential between the seismic response of structures on soil and rock.which constitute solid evidence of the superiority of phenomena with low inherent energy.Because of these features, and as the case histories show.a strong and competent structure built on rock would most likely be capable of withstanding relatively large seismic events with little or no damage.
