Disubstituted and 1,2,2-trisubstituted 1,2-dihydro-3H-indol-3-ones(3-6)have been synthesized via singlet oxygen reaction of 2-phenylindole(1_a) and 1-methyl-2-phenylindole(1_b) in methanol,followed by acid-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution of the resulting oxidation products(2) in good yields.
