Abstract We measure what we treasure. So statistics are never value-free but focus on what societies deem important. For better or worse, they guide government, business and individual decisions. GNP & GDP system was adopted into national accounting systems by the United States and its allies to measure and maximize war production. Today we have found many shortcomings of the system. For example, it sets the value of education and public infrastructure, clean air and water and other environmental assets at zero. It also ignores the labour such as do-it-yourself home construction and repairs, food growing, household maintenance, , parenting children and volunleering. Now scientists begin to adjust the GDP/ GNP system or to develop new index system. In this article, the author advocates replacing GNP/ GDP with new measurements of progress, and redefining wealth.
