ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of cerebral blood flow velocity(CBFV) induced by digit and arithmetic cognitive tasks and to determine the influence of gender, quality of the performance on the relative CBFV changes. MethodsSimultaneous bilateral transcranial ultrasonography Doppler (TCD) monitoring of CBFV in the middle cerebral arteries (MCAs) was performed in right-handed 45 normal volunteers during digit and arithmetic tasks and their preceding rest periods. ResultsCompared with their preceding rest periods, the relative CBFV changes of digit cognitive tasks in left was 8.6±4.6 and in right was 7.4±4.7; the relative CBFV changes of arithmetic cognitive tasks in left was 14.5±4.6 and in right was 8.8±4.6.Two tasks induced a significant bilateral CBFV increase in the MCAs (P<0.001) and showed a significant left-hemisphere CBFV acceleration(The laterality index of digit cognitive tasks was 7.4±19.2 and arithmetic cognitive tasks was 26.3±24.7). Gender had no influence on laterality, but higher relative CBFV changes were observed in the male group when arithmetic cognitive task was performed. Performance quality did not reveal significant effects on CBFV change. ConclusionDigit and arithmetic cognitive tasks can induce a significant left-hemisphere CBFV acceleration.
