With a rapid expansion in the demand of China's steel enterprises for iron ore, how to strive for a voice in the international iron ore trade negotiations will, to a great extent, decide the fortune of China's steel enterprises. China is now the biggest importer of iron ore, but the steel industry across Asia is still represented by the Japanese mills on pricing. BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have been negotiating with Japan on expected big price hikes, which will seriously hurt China's mid- and small-size steel mills. How to deal with this situation becomes a major problem for China's steel industry as a whole. For long-term development, China's steel industry must catch the pricing rights on iron ore from Japan's rivals. China began fighting for the rights and 2004's negotiations with world's three biggest iron ore producers is the first attempt, although the endeavor ended up in a failure because of many reasons such as low industry concentration, etc. Nonetheless, we saw hope that China began to have its say in the world's iron ore trading.
