Objective: To investigate the relationship between the concentration of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in synovial fluid and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. Methods: According to whether patients had pain, the samples from 126 TMJs in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients were divided into two groups: ①painful group(n=90) ; ②painless group(n=36). Samples from healthy volunteers served as control group(n=32). Radioimmunoassay was used to examine the concentration of NPY. Results: The concentration of NPY of painful group (133.5±46.7 pg/ml) was significantly higher than that of painless group (99.7±25.9 pg/ml) and control group (83.3±28.4 pg/ml). Conclusion: The level of NPY in synovial fluid of patients was significantly higher than that of healthy individuals. Among the patients, there was a significant difference between painful group and painless group. This indicates that there is inflammation in TMJ, and that the NPY level is closely correlated with TMJ pain.
