摘要
美国清教主义是集神学、哲学、意识形态等为一体的思想体系,是美国文化、文学的基岩,它的“盟约神学”的内容虽几经置换,却仍然对美国社会发挥着巨大作用,更为特殊的是,清教主义到达新大陆之初便孕育着自我颠覆的变数。从清教主义中伴生出来的清教文学也有着迥异于英国文学的主题、文体和文类特色,它的荒原意象、鲜明的善恶观等极大地影响着美国文学的批评与创作。
As the bedrock of American literature and culture, American Puritanism is a systematic synthesis of theology, philosophy and ideology. Its 'covenant t heology', the content of which underwent a series of replacement, still exerts g reat influence on American society. What arouses one′s special interest is the potentially self-subversive characteristics of Puritanism ever since its first a rrival in New England. Puritan literature concomitant with Puritanism also diffe rentiates itself from British literature with its distinctive themes, genres and style, among which the image of wilderness and the profound thoughts on good an d evil influence greatly American literary criticism and creation.
