Chopstick-using is a culture-related skill. The present study examined the development of three characteristics of the chopstick-using skill and their relationships to Chinese children's academic achievements. The results indicated that :(1)There were significant differences between 4-year-olds and any other groups and between 5-year-olds and 7~8-year-olds in the accuracy, stability and rapidity of the chopstick-using skill. To compare with those of adults, the levels of three characteristics of 8-year-olds were still significantly lower. (2)There was significant difference between high-achievement children and low-achievement children in the stability of the chopstick-using skill.(3)Particularly, there was significant correlation between the stability and rapidity of chopstick-using skill and children's achievement in the Chinese language, but the correlation is not significant between all the three characteristics and children's achievement in mathematics. It is suggested that there is much closer relation between the chopstick-using skill and children's performance in the Chinese language.
