After falling out of favor for decades, superefficient supercritical(SC) steam cycles recently have seen their stocks rise among U.S. utilities and developers. Among the reasons for the renewed interest are higher fuel prices, the premium that competition has placed on operating efficiency, and the inverse relationship between thermal efficiency and the production of pollutants including CO2. By analyzing the availiabity, reliability, cyclic duty and maintainability, the paper demonstrates the advantages of SC units. It is concluded with economic and material analysis.
