尤金·奥尼尔作为美国最伟大的剧作家之一,一生都在试图通过自己的作品为人们揭示生命背后的神秘力量。晚年的奥尼尔痴迷于具有神秘主义色彩的中国道家哲学,道家思想不仅影响到他的生活,还渗透到他的戏剧创作中。正是由于奥尼尔对"无为"、"循环回归"和"齐物论"道家思想的接纳和吸收,才使得他的晚期作品更加深刻,更具感染力。
Eugene O'Neill,one of the greatest American dramatists,spends all his life to reveal the mysterious forces behind life through his works. In his late years,O'Neill becomes obsessed with mysterious Chinese philosophy of Taoism and therefore the Taoism has exerted enormous impact on O'Neill's drama creation as well as his life. It is O'Neill's assimilation of Taoism——Inactivity,Circulation and On the Equality of Things that makes his late works more profound and more powerful.
