李冶是十三世纪杰出的代数学家,他总结并完善了天元术,使之成为我国独特的半符号代数。另外,他在文史方面也深有造诣,堪称一位多才多艺的学者。他的学术成就及治学态度,对后世有着深远的影响。
Li Ye was a distinguished Chinese algebraist in the thirteenth century. His ma-thematical research concentrated on Tian Yuan Shu (an ancient method to deal with numeric equations of higher degrees). His most representative work is Ce Yuan Hai Jing in which he summarized and perfected this method, thus creating a kind of uni-que Chinese semi-symbolic algebra. The book is an important work in the history of
Chinese algebra. Li Ye also was an educator and wrote the 3-volume Yi Guo Yan Duan for tea-ching purposes.Li Ye also made significant contributions, in both literature and history. His work Jing Zhai Gu Jin Tou included literature, history, astronomy, mathematics, philoso-
phy and medicine, particularly with a lot of original ideas in literature and history.This paper not only summarized his academic achievement, but also introduces his ideas on teaching attitude and politics.
