The Zhujiatai Site is located on a stretch of highland on the southern bank of the Hanjiang River at its confluence with the Zhenghe River, 2.5 km south of the seat of Junxian County, northwestern Hubei Province. It covers an area of over 8000 sq m and has cuhural deposits 1.4—2.5 m thick, consisting of Yangshao and Zhou Dynasties layers and a small amount of Western Han relics. The Yangshao layers can be divided into an earlier and a later period. The earlier complex consists of an ash-pit and pottery, stone and bone objects. Most of the pottery vessels are orange ware, followed by grey coarse one . They are coil-built, baked at a low kiln temperature and decorated mainly with bow string, apphed and fine cord patterns. For shapes, there are the tirpod-ding, bowl-bo, bowl-wan, basin, pot, bottle, lid and stand. The stone tools are mostly chipped ones and polished ones are few.In the later Yangshao layers there are found 3 house-foundations, 3 ash-pits, 4 tombs and a large number of pottery, stone, bone and horn articles. The pottery objects are partly similar to those of the earlier period, with the differences that there is an increase fo grey clay ware backed at a kiln temperature lower than that of the former period, nipple anl basket patterns appeared and the vessels are more varied in form and type. The stone tools are polished or pecked, with overall polished ones found more commonly. The terminus a quo of the Western Zhou Dynasty remains is in the middle period of the dynasty and their terminus ad quem is in the times from the late period of the lynasty to the early Spring and Autumn Period. The Eastern Zhou Dynasty relics roughly belong to the middle and late Spring and Autumn Period and the early Warring States Period.
