The Neolithic Zuojiashan site is situated on the second terrace on the northern bank of the Itong River, a tributary of the Songhuajiang River in Jilin Province, 4 km northeast of the seat of Nong'an County. About 1200 sq m of the site are intact.
Excavation here was conducted in the spring of 1985 and 400 sq m of the site were revealed, with 1 house-foundation, 2 spots of burnt clay, 20 ashpits and a large number of pottery, stone and bone objects discovered.
According to the stratigraphical evidence uncovered and the comparison of the types and decorations of the unearthed pottery, the cultural remains of the site is temporarily derided into 3 periods, the first one of which can be subdivided into an earlier and a later stage. Between these threeperiods, there are different degrees of diversity and connection in cultural aspect. Judging from their characteristics, the remains possibly represent three cultural complexes. The age of the site is about' 4800-7000 B. P.
The excavation of the Zuojiashan site provides a new stratigraphical basis for the establishment of the relative chronology of some Neolithic complexes discovered in the northeast China.
