摘要
在编选英语教材时,我们是如何确定所选材料的难度的呢?一般都是根据自己的教学经验,凭自己的主观感觉作出判断。这种判断有没有客观依据呢?当然也有。譬如说,句子的复杂程度、生词和短语的数量、题材的生熟等等,都是我们判断教材难度的客观依据。但判断毕竟还是根据主观的经验和感觉作出的,因此,不能算作一种客观的科学方法。
This paper recommends the use of Edward Fry's Graph for Estimating Readability, which has won pub-lic recognition and is widely applied in North America because of its objectivity and simplicity. Five stepsin applying the graph are described; statistics of its application to sample English textbooks at six levelsof readability are presented in tabular form, which shows that the graph is also applicable to English text-books for non-native speakers. Finally some limitations of the graph are discussed, especially as appliedto EFL textbooks.
