摘要
据不完全统计，目前在加拿大的华侨华人约１００万。其中广东人占８０％。据史料记载，最早到加拿大的华侨是广东人。１７８８年，有７０名广东铁匠、木匠从澳门乘船到达温哥华岛。以后接踵而来，人数激增。初到加拿大的广东人，多是从事淘金、修筑铁路等繁重劳动。至本世纪５０年代以后，才转而从事餐馆业、商业、房地产业、金融业等。以至有些广东人进入了政治、文化界上层职业领域，担任高级职员。２００年来。
According to incomplete statistics,at present there are about 1000 thousand Chinese in Canada,of which 80% are Cantonese.Historical records show that the earliest Chinese in Canada were Cantonese.In 1788,setting sail from Macao,70 Cantonese blacksmiths and carpenters reached Vancouver Island.With still more to come,the number of Chinese increased rapidly.In Canada,the earliest Cantonese engaged in heavy labor,such as gold panning and railway construction.Not until the 1950s did they turn to restaurant business,trading,real estate and finance etc.,and as a result,some Cantonese became senior staff members in higher political and cultural circles.In the last 200 years,overseas Cantonese have made great contribution to the development and improvement of the economy and the society of Canada.
