The relationship between historical studies and reality is a issue of long term debate among historians.In this respect,Chinese historians have experienced detours.Before the Liberation,when there was not freedom of speech,progressive historians thus insinuated the rule of the Kuomintang government through the means of ‘historical comparison'.During the 1950s and 1960s,under the impact of the ultra left trend of thought,there emerged such lopsided slogues in the circle of history as ‘laying more stress on the present than the past' and ‘serving the real politics'.This article discusses Jian Bozan's and Li Shu's rethinking and criticizing respectively in the 1960s and 1980s of such phenomena in historical studies.
